Hey. Here's a quick look at where a great deal of our country's data is stored.

Well. Isn't this special?

HP's (now former) CEO is out. Less then one month after blind-siding the Board of directors of HP, (when the (now fired CEO) announced the dismemberment of the entire company by selling the PC division, and junking the former PALM OS (now WEB-OS HW and SW) unit, and creating a FIRE-Sale situation for all them $400 tablets at $100, he is GONE.

Replacing him is Ms. (I can't be a Governor, I'm too business-like to win), Meg Whitman.

LOL...

Oh yeah.

If it were me (I should be so lucky one day...)

a) I would create a new fully owned corporation called Palmcorp.

I would take web-os, license it, and all of the hardware (think phones and touchpad) back to palmcorp

And then I would AGGRESSIVE recruit, and restart the development, and raise the price on tablets from $100 and $150 to $199 and $250 (one hundred dollar price increase) for the NEXT generation (to be
released first quarter next year.
and just chalk off the loss to market generation.

But... I just am a forward thinking, cyber-geek.

Then we need to:

* Enact a REAL JOBS program, similar to the Works Project Administration.

9 8 7 days and counting.AND if we're lucky, the PRESIDENT will NOT bow down to the demands of the Tea-Party and Republican idiots. Low Expectations Man -- A view of life

We're in Depression 2.0 (tm). This post is dedicated and directed to my dear sister!

Call me Low Expectations man. I figured out early in life, that the lower your expectations in life, the less you will be disappointed (and happier you will eventually be).

Example. My kids. Dearest Daughter? Low expectations during high school? Great outcomes and makes me very proud today.

My view of America's support of Israel? Lukewarm at best for the past 7 presidents. My opinion? Presidents have way more important things to worry about then Israel. Take one of the presidents of the last century I feel is one of the OUTSTANDING of our presidents, Franklin D. Roosevelt.

He actually VETOED suggestions by his top aides to bomb the German railroad lines during the second war (Note, NOT the GREAT second WAR, but WWII) , despite being shown proof of the jews being brought to the Death camps.

However, (he died before Israel was approved by the UN), his successor Harry Truman, supported Israel immediately.

Thus my feelings of why the USA does the bare minimum it ever can when it comes to supporting Israel.

Thus also my supreme rejection of Jewish voters who claim to now support ABO (anyone but Obama) because of his lack of support of Israel.

We're in a state of CLASS Warfare, as declared by the the republicans THEMSELVES.
For ANYONE who has ever thought that we need SOCIAL programs like:

SOCIAL SECURITY
A fair Living WAGE
FULL EMPLOYMENT
FAIR taxes paid by ALL Americans (and AMERICAN Companies)
MORE regulation of the FINANCIAL markets (the Glass-Steagal act did WONDERS until it's repeal in the early 1990's)

[think of the UNREGULATED messes of 1929 (Depression 1.0) and 2008 (Start of Depression 2.0)]

At any rate, that is why I feel that:

President Obama, despite his lack-luster support of Israel (but just about average for the past 7-10 presidents) Needs our support.
The current state of Class Warfare, as declared and currently practiced by the republican party (lower case!)n , is a BATTLE-CRY for the folks who think that WALL street and CORPORATIONS are WAY WAY WAY out of control.
We need a HUGE spending program to get our economy back out of the sh_t-hole that it's currently in,
We need a MINIMUM Millionaire tax (based on the GROSS income, including Dividends and Interest) to equal out our playing field in this country.

It's the TWO state solution-- with the 1948 borders...DOY

The ONLY real peace in the mideast is simple.

When ALL of the arab countries accept the 1948 two state solution to the BRITISH PALESTINE problem (similar to their stupid assed partition of INDIA and Pakistan)

THEN we will all have peace.

mentioned that the problems are

1) ALL arab countries declared war on the newly created state in 1948.
2) The local religious leaders (the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem) told all the Arab residents to LEAVE, so we can wipe out all the Jews, and you can come back in a few days . (THIS by the way is the CAUSE of the 60 years of REFUGEE camps in ALL the arab countries (JORDAN/Lebanon/Syria and Egypt)... (none of which EVER gave ANY of those refugees CITIZENSHIP in their countries, despite being born there...

3) The fact that the 1948 borders include HALF of the state of Jordan. THAT is a REAL show-stopper. OR is it?
4) The state of Jerusalem as an international city. I accept this. I just don't accept the United Nations OR Jordan as administering it. THE UN vacated the borders in 1956, and Jordan really didnt do a good job of administering it FAIRLY during the 19 years they controlled EAST Jerusalem.

SO it's total bullshit for the Palestinians to try and declare a state at the UN.

and (Low expectations man that I am) I really don't hold much faith in the United States' support of Israel. However, President Obama has done the absolute minimum to support Israel, by saying that he will veto this attempt at the UN security council for statehood.

Civility and Congress

I was chatting with my sister today (unbelievably, a Republican--take THAT sis..), and it came up that she really was a "don't bother me, I won't listen to ya, I am a ""BIRTH-er" republican....

ALL I can say to this is that the Cause OF THE DISEASE we currently have in congress is NOT the fault of the democrats.

We are suffering from a TOTAL lack of civility. It started with the Republicans. They are the ones who claim the Legally elected President of the United States isn't a citizen. They are the ones who say, "We will do EVERYTHING we can do in Congress to defeat him".

This lack of civility is the cause of the decay of our civilization. Once upon a time, members of congress worked 4 days a week instead of just THREE days per week. In those long ago days, members would actually live in Washington, and FRATERNIZE with the enemy (the other party).

It was not unknown for two congresspeople of different parties to ACTUALLY be FRIENDS, and understand the point of view of the other. This is now gone, replaced by a congress where they work less hours per week, and actually fly home (costing us the taxpayer much more) every weekend.

I bring this up, only because my other (democratic) sister refused to listen to my starting this political discussion, and when she left, pubby and I started to talk (calmly, I thought), until she said she was STILL a birth-er, despite the release of his birth certificate.

I tried to explain to her that this was an extremely offensive remark to me, and that civility was the problem that we have in congress, as well as in our family.

I told her I would NOT make disparaging remarks about the last president, (and Secretary of Defense), if she would not defame my president. I also asked her if she knew her remark was actually treasonous. I stand corrected, according to dictionary.com I am thinking of sedition, defined as:

Sedition is any act, writing, speech, etc., directed unlawfully against state authority, the government, or constitution, or calculated to bring it into contempt or to incite others to hostility, ill will or disaffection; it does not amount to treason and therefore is not a capital offense.

I will however state that I believe that the beliefs of those who claim to be Tea-Party members are NOT as honest as they claim, and that they all have hidden, as well as confused agendas.

(Confused agendas?:

Ask 10 tea-party members if they support budget cuts.

Then ask them if they support cutting Social Security or Medicare..
Then ask them if they think the two biggest expenditures (besides the military) of the federal government should just be left alone, without cuts.
Then ask them if they support cutting federal school lunch programs.
Ask them if they know that their candidates support trashing these programs. (example: Rick Perry claims Social Security is a Ponzi Scheme (like Bernie Maidoff).

I believe that the "average" rank and file tea party member is NOT aware of the distinctions I have made, and that if they knew the effects they would NOT support such drastic budget cuts.

I will close this post by saying that we all need to become more Civil between parties and people. I will start by personally not calling the Tea-Party, the "Tea-Baggers Party" anymore (especially since I was told by my son that "tea-bagging" is not EVER discussed in mixed OR polite company).

Moving Forward: The President's Rebuilding Speech

Hey. I'm still underwhelmed. I say we need a "NEW-DEAL", like the Works Projects Administration during the New Deal.

We need several TRILLION Dollars in Rebuilding. We need A FULL Job training program where we can offer MORE then just summer jobs.

We need to FIRST agree to spend money to get OUT of this mess. Only THEN can we do deficit reductions.

Please. WE need a LEADER. Not a negotiator. NOT someone who claims to want to COMPROMISE with the "ENEMY" party (the Republicans).

We currently need to sell this plan to the ENTIRE country. And make sure that the people in congress understand that WE WILL ALL hold them accountable, and we are WATCHING them.

With regard to fair taxes, I have proposed an Minimum Millionaire's Tax (MMT), which is simple.
if you income is over 5 million dollars, you will now pay a MINIMUM tax of 1% of your GROSS income. No exclusions, no net, but on GROSS income and dividends.

Hey. It's NEVER too early to shout out to to our congress that they need to start to REALLY work.

Our country's fiscal year is over on September 30th. What are the chances this "DO NOTHING except defeat the incumbent president" (to quote the GOP senate Minority Leader) Congress will actually consider a budget before September 25th??? Zero to Null percentage of that happening.

TWICE this year (the spring budget problem), and the Summer Debt ceiling crisis the American people were HIJACKED by the Republican party and the so called "Tea Party" patriots.

NOT AGAIN. It's time for us to remind OUR CONGRESS we want ACTION NOW, and forget about the bull-sh*t of not approving the budget until we make more cuts in the deficit.

NETFLIX raises prices, and screws it's subscribers with an unjustified and unconscionable

rate hike

And Thursday Night the Starz TV network just Screwed Netflix, by saying "Sayanora Netflix"

Come January 2012.

Well I for one, think this is the just deserts for Netflix.

I have been a member since the pre-streaming days.  I just gave up my CD/mailbox version

and will now be ready to also destroy my streaming membership on 12/31.

Netflix has hit the "microsoft" syndrome of the late 1980's and early 1990's.  NOT listening

to it's customers and doing what IT wanted, ignoring the market.

HA HA HA HA HA...

and if Netflix really really wanted to listen to its customers,

here are a few things they could have done to keep down costs:

1) limit streaming to 3 devices at once.

2) limit streaming to the SAME geographic area (via IP analysis.)

3) implement a 'grandfathered' membership.  those with previously existing accounts would

not be charged the rate increase.

4) Be willing to negotiate in good faith with suppliers.

As it is, I predict that Netflix will no longer be a viable company as of the beginning of

next year

It's another Shame out. Over 5 years ago, I realized the following:
1) We were heading into a GREAT recessions (I call it depression 2.0)
2) Our Economy was devastated,
3) Our school system was shot.
4) Our tax (income tax) system is unfair.
5) The wealth in this country is not fairly distributed
6) We Are NOT in a fairly distributed society (unequal education).
7) The Infrastructure in this country is shot.
What did I say we need?
A serious look at the conditions show us that our conditions today are EXACTLY the same as just after the "Great Depression" (Depression 1.0).
How did Herbert Hoover deal with the "great crash of 1929?" HE CUT THE DEFICIT, and made the problem MUCH MUCH worse.
What does the Tea-Baggers party (I refuse to call them the tea-party..., sorry!) want?
TO CUT the deficit, just like HERBERT HOOVER did.
What do we REALLY NEED>?
* A works project Administration
* A new LIVING wage, as well as a renamed 'minimum wage' (to be called a TRAINING wage)
* REALLY tax the wealthy. NO more claiming millions in income, and ZERO paid in taxes (a la G.E., and many other billionaires)..
* Fair Training,
* SINGLE PAYER GOVERNMENT Provided Universal Health Care for all (phased in over 20 years, starting with our current private system, and then gettin g to 5 or 6 nationwide provider networks.
* Educational REFORM... starting with a privately run government paid day care starting at six months ... (Think Geofery Canada in NYC)

SO the republicans claim that there is NO number that would be acceptable as a balance.

IE: they were asked if a three to one (three dollar reduction in spending to a one dollar tax increase) would be acceptable they all said "NO".

Follow ups said that not even a 10 to one balance was acceptable.

PS: It's time for the republicans to understand that it's the ECONOMY, STUPID, and
that the 8 months that they have OBSTRUCTED congress and held up the budget, and the debt ceiling have NOT helped, but HURT our economy...

OK.... I really can't believe that the TEA-Party is about to ambush the American Country.

I think that the first step is that Congress should pass a law stating that

* Any time there is a potential to stop the government via budget problems (or debt ceiling talks); The first agencies that will NOT be paid will be the Legislative branch of government.

ie: If there is a reduction in the debt ceiling -- congress would not get paid...

Now for serious stuff:

If the Republicians do not give up the concept of 'no new taxes', I predict the following reactions:

The cost of borrowing will go up.

For the Federal Government
For State Government
For local cities, and government agencies (MTA/Thruway authority, etc)
For Every single Citizen in the country

The stock market will crash. I predict an eventual return to 6,000 Dow jones again. The problems this will engender are:

It will be a gradual drop, because the exchanges have put 'built-in' market limits into effect, so it might not drop 1,500 points in one day, but maybe a series of days.
All corporate spending will stop. Totally.

NO new employment
There will be a huge drop in R&D (Research and Development), as companies will absolutely be in ca$h saving mode.
Government as well as corporate bonds will be worthless and trading in them may easily be stopped.

The unemployment rate is going to ZOOM upward.

Currently unemployed people will continue to collect unemployment
Companies will Not hire or put out new jobs to fill
States and Cities will have bigger and bigger budget deficits and will start to lay off local workers.

We will OFFICIALLY enter a DEPRESSION 2.0. Since before 2008, I've been saying we're currently IN a recession, and that we only saw 25% of the iceberg in 2008

THIS IS the FIRST part of that 75% we haven't seen before.

I really think this is disgusting, and that EVERY citizen needs to call their congressman, and tell them
that if they WONT vote for a COMPROMISE with the senate, that they will NOT vote for them in 2012.

We need to stop this massive show of partisanship. It turns out that the lack of fraternization between congressmen of different parties has caused this.

We need to stop this. We need to take every single Tea-Bagger, and send them into early retirement in 2012.

The stock Market crashed over 600 points today (monday).
I say this is ONLY the start, and unless we take
Grover Norquist out and shoot him (just kidding!) nothing will change, and my previous prediction (dow around 5k-6K) will come to pass.

Peace Now: 1948 Borders.

Yes, we want Peace. Peace is NOT the absence of hostility.
Peace is a process where BOTH parties wish to embrace each other, and do not fear the other party.

A good start to REAL peace is NOT the 1967 borders. The real answer to peace is the FIRST two state solution proposed by the UN in 1947/1948.

It will require much thought on both sides.

First: The "west bank" and "east Jerusalem" were partially annexed in 1967 by Israel.

They based this on several precedents, especially that of (then) Trans-Jordan which annexed the land intended for the 1948 Palestinian state.

So. Let's start out resolving a few issues.
1) Two state solution. Agreed.
2) Land mass. Perhaps if Jordan gives up the land IT took, Israel might give up some additional land.

3) Jerusalem: An International City. Fine. Jordan's 19 years of custodian-ship of Jerusalem shows that not one Jew was allowed into Jewish religious locations during that time. In the almost 45 years Israel has administered East Jerusalem, millions of Muslims and Christians have been allowed to worship freely there.
Point? Israel will administer the international city.

4) Right of Return:
I'm Jewish. Therefore I answer a question with a question. Why is it that in 1948 there were ALL of these refugees? Because the Muslim leaders told their populations to leave, and "let us push the Jews into the sea", and then you can come back.

Whoops. We bad. Now you are homeless. Instead of offering you citizenship in Lebanon/Syria/Jordan and Egypt, we will make you third class citizens, and call you Refugees, and NOT make you legal citizens of our countries.

Let's see if some reparations can be made by the Arab countries who refused to give their brothers citizenship for over 60 years.

I just love Sarah Palin. Just not as a Vice President, or heaven forbid, President.

In her great reality TV show, the former governor of Alaska (who you recall decided to quit before her term was over) was...

She mutters, “Where are the s'mores ingredients? This is in honor of Michelle Obama, who said the other day we should not have dessert."

ABC News's 'The Note' explains that,

Palin has been highly critical of Michelle Obama’s campaign to combat childhood obesity. She brought cookies to a Pennsylvania High School to argue that what kids eat should be a parent’s choice, not the governments.

Well. We {should all } know from watching her bastard grandchild (technically a bastard is the outcome of two non-married people!), that she isn't a role model that conservative America should REALLY follow.

But does that stop her? Not at all.

HERE's my analysis of this.

The 'pubs know that they DONT have a majority in congress.

They are praying that the vocal minority (as opposed to the MORAL majority)
can blow away health care, so that President Obama can be embarrassed.

In reality, what's happening is that there is YET ANOTHER loophole in the campaign contribution laws.

Large companies (such as Insurance companies, or drug companies), can fund (without ANY limits or requirements to PUBLISH what and how much it pays for this) ANY non-campaign type organization that they want.

They can (for example) give ONE million dollars to me, to so an example: )I can pay 1,000 of my friends $1,000 each) to join me at 100 different locations this summer.

SO, lets presume, myself and my 9 buddies show up at Senator X's Town hall meeting which is to discuss health care.

Now, we don't sit all together, but we sit in 5 different locations, 2 each (like couples).

AND we start screaming. NO new health care now.... NO changes ...

And

If you DIDN'T know better you'd think that there was a HUGE backlash against a
health care bill.

Instead of just seeing that there are 10 big mouth PAID "Agent Provocateurs"
who are just doing the will of these LARGE companies.

We need to ACTIVELY combat this. It is impossible. We CANNOT let HEALTH CARE slip away AGAIN!!!

support Health care for ALL. (KILL A REPUBLICAN today!!!) (just kidding, please no violence, just tape all their mouths closed.!)

In reality we need (what I proposed here : in my top ten list:

SINGLE payer Health care, phased in over 5-20 years, starting with EXACTLY what we have today, private companies, that will start to enroll the uninsured, at the government expense.

OK. I mentioned HERE (over two years ago...) that we NEED to remove all the "For-Profit" Contractors that are now embedded in our US army (courtesy of Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfield, and the 'non-dynamic' Bush Duo (49 and 51).

But today's discussion is about the "Troop Surge" in Afghanistan. Why? Do we need it?

I say (quite often) that we are in the second decade of the Bush hundred years war.
If you see this point of view (starting with the FIRST gulf-war in 1990), you will see that we are not in a short term commitment. (In my personal opinion), It was NOT a smart decision by our past president to declare war in Iraq (and Afghanistan).

However, we absolutely need to start to transition and train local troops so they can take over for us.

Think of it this way.

We've Already Lost the Bush war in Iraq. Before we lose the Bush war in Afghanistan, we need to understand that Afghanistan and Pakistan share a very loose, non-patrolled border, and Pakistan is STILL a nucc-ulear power.

If we do NOT help to stabilize Afghanistan, the damage that has just STARTED in Pakistan will continue, and will lead to Pakistan becoming a failed state, just like Afghanistan, or Somalia.

This however, is not a good idea, since this might lead to unsecured warheads, in dangerous hands.

It's about the now famous Ft-Hood Shooter; the Muslim major.

1) did you know he went to Medical School courtesy of the US army? He was a podiatrist when he went into the army.

2) Apparently, when he was at school, There were some concerned people were at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C. (where he attended medical school),about his performance there. Daniel Zwerdling discusses this:

...At the end of 2007, the government sent Hasan to the military's medical school, ...right here in the Washington, D.C. area. And pretty soon the psychiatrists and officials and professors there were very worried about Hasan and they started having a series of conversations and meetings in early 2008, wondering - is it possible that Nidal Hasan is psychotic?

And, It basically means out of touch with reality, and if doctors are using this word, they mean it in that very specific, clinical way.

It was not you know, he was not sent, puzzling enough, to a mental evaluation, but what made them wonder if he was psychotic is that one thing is that they kept telling him over and over again - and I've gotten documents that show this - Nidal, youre doing a really bad job; ...academically you are just not cutting it. And he basically would blow them off and ignore them.

Here's the kicker to this story (which to my knowledge had almost NO impact today!

We should be clear - in fact its part of your story - that there was no formal psychiatric evaluation of this man. But still, you have doctors and colleagues who are very concerned about him. I mean what did they do about it?

ZWERDLING: They sat around trying to figure out where could we sent Nidal Hasan that would do the least harm? One psychiatrist said, you know, in the military there's a long tradition - when you have somebody who is a loser or is a failure or you're worried about, you try to create a job for them where they can, ...do as little harm as possible. And they decided, lets send him to Fort Hood.

Why Fort Hood? Because Fort Hood has a bigger mental health staff than most Army bases, and they thought, you know, at least if he goes to Fort Hood and he doesn't do anything of value, theres plenty of other people to pick up the slack. But number two, there will be lots of psychiatrists around there to help him and monitor him.

But one psychiatrist said to me, you know, we were sort of hoping he'd go to Fort Hood and disappear.

Hmmm....

NJ, Corruption, Development, and the death of cities/Robert Moses

I am writing this because of Brian Lehrer's discussion about NJ/politics/corruption...

OK. First, if you've never heard of Robert Moses (whom I call the "destroyer of NY") please look at this older post I wrote last year about him HERE:

To summarize (and plagerize myself [heh-heh]):

My position on Mr. Moses comes from the fact that a great deal of Mr. Moses's foibles caused a great deal of shame and problems for New York City, that remain to this day such as:

Mr. Moses was a racist.
Mr. Moses was an upper class slob.
Mr. Moses was class conscious

These three factors totally influenced how and where our City developed in his reign of terror and power in our city.

Given this as a starting point, I contend the following*:

The lack of public transportation in our tri-state (and even nationally), is a great shame.
This lack of infrastructure (on a national scale) has damaged our environment, our
country, and even our competitive situation in the world.
The fact that development in the nation has become auto (and truck) centric, has been a terrible tragedy willed on us by people such as Robert Moses.

Now to become NJ centric, and discuss politics, and industrial development
(and 0f course corruption!):

Urban Sprawl (unchecked development of office parks, malls, and strip malls) is killing NJ. We need a centralized (State-wide) plan. Exclusive development decisions must be removed from municipal authorities.
Our method of administration (country-wide) and political service needs reformed.

Here's where my National plan addresses NJ:

Similar to the tradition of military academies in our country, we need to establish political academies, and elevate the education and professionalism of our politicians. Hopefully, by making the education, and income of legislators level, we can elevate the profession of politician from political lackey to professionalism we expect from our military.

Other ideas:?

We need to make sure legislatiors cannot "Double-Dip", and have multiple positions, or multiple public pensions... (give the HIGHER of cost of salary or pension for a person), not both.

We need to start to enforce and arrest developers. We need to start to re-think development. NO More MALLS or strip malls. We need manufacturing again...

Sound interesting? It's a start... and I hope you listen...

Interesting.

Right after last night's story that I posted about the Fed Worker that was found hanged in Kentucky, with the word "FED" on his chest, I found this delightful, yet esoteric article in the book review section of this week's NEW Yorker, discussing of all things, The Dreyfus affair (talk about ANCIENT history)

Yet, this article DOES matter. In it, Adam Gopnik makes a very interesting point.

First he introduces Louis Begley's new book, “Why the Dreyfus Affair Matters” (Yale; $24).
And then he cuts to the chase. Mr. Begley discusses the Dreyfus affair, and uses it as a metaphor for showing and warning us, as a "pointed warning and reminder of how fragile the standards of civilized conduct prove in moments of national panic."

Well. I am going to skip a great deal of Mr. Gopnik's article, discussing why it does matter, what happened, and why the USA (think Guantánamo Bay) has similar problems. You can read the article (even if you don't subscribe--use the link above!)

Gopnik makes a very astute point, which is as valid today (Rush Limbaugh and associates) as it was 100 years ago.

He says,

"The trouble was that, like most happy endings, the happy ending was not the end. The good guys won in a way that only made the bad guys worse.

As with Watergate, the immediate outcome of the affair gave a misleading impression of unanimity; in truth, while the good guys thought the other guys had absorbed it as a lesson, they had merely resented it as a defeat."

This reminds me SO SO much of the what I think of the disloyal opposition party, in their new scare tactics against Health care, so called Tea parties, and the birth certificate experience, that I cannot help but use my common sense, and create a new mental arithmetic for myself that shows that all these items add up to a new state of DENIAL for republicans in the USA.

Combine that with the fact that they are now the minority party, and that could easily mean that
we will have :

No health care reform
No meaningful anything in the next few years.

And again, as I have said all along, the republicans are the party of NO Health CARE reform.

Six times in sixty years, and now close to a seventh time killing it.

Let's bring back the fairness doctrine to the radio and television airwaves.
that would mean Fox News might actually live up to it's so called motto of "Fair and Balanced", instead of the right wing spin it puts on EVERYTHING.

A U.S. Census worker (was) found hanged from a tree near a Kentucky cemetery had the word "fed" scrawled on his chest, a law enforcement official said Wednesday

This is EXACTLY what I have been saying. The RIGHT wing so called "loyal" (used with bitter irony) opposition is ANYTHING but loyal, and is unintentionally starting to polarize our country.

I have refrained from complaining about the "Town Hall" and "Death watch" meetings, and rumors, innuendos and lies being foisted by the political party now out of office.

HOWEVER, these EXTREMELY polarizing views are STARTING to have an effect.

This is simply the first example.

Try reading Orson Scott Card's novel about the second US civil war, titled "Empire".
Exactly this (Right vs. Left) bullsh*t.

We do not need the party in opposition to the president to plant this kind of civil disobedience.

We need health care reform. These tactics are ALL smokescreens to help prevent this...

OK: You want the truth?

Arab/Palestinian hostility to Israel, (and I maintain; blatent anti-Semitic) behavior dates WAY back before the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948.

In 1929, arabs rioted, and killed (129(?*) jews), in a town called Hebron . Hebron is now in
what is called 'disputed territory'.

When this happened in the late 1800's and early 20th century, we called this a "POGROM".

This is NOT a question of simply continuing to exclude palestinians.

It is REALLY about the 1948 UN partition plan. Which was NEVER EVER accepted by ANY arab country.

UNTIL this peace plan (originally proposed in 1948--search my blog for 'mideast UN')
is ACCEPTED by all the MUSLIM AND arab countries there can be NO peace in the mid-east.

When the arab world FINALLY accepts the right of ISRAEL to exist as a country (as proposed in 1948) THEN we can continue on the road to peace.

Until then, it is only a PIECE that Israel wants; a piece of paper with a SIGNATURE on it, saying yes, we agree that there should be two states.

OH yes, I agree that there will be some problems.

1) getting arab/muslim acceptance will be tough.
2) Agreeing that there should be TWO states is a good start; but there will be more problems too!
3) Joint administration of Jerusalem? Jordan failed in 19 years of rule. Not one Jew was ever able to visit. Israel has shown that this will work, as we have been completely open.
4) LAND of the two states. I will leave this for another message, at another time, because JORDAN annexed 50% of the future state of PALESTINE, and will need to FINALLY give it back!!!

As a white, middle aged male, I tell my (white) teen-aged son (all the time!!!)

You absolutely must never question someone in authority. Police Officers, Teachers, and even social-workers and the like will always have power over you, even if you've just met them.

The day you open your mouth to a police officer and tell him , "but Officer", XYZ, you are leaving yourself WIDE open to get into trouble, which could be as small as a ticket, or as big as being shot to death for resisting arrest.

I say to Professor Gates:

Yes, you are right. The history of racism in our country is horrific, and its effects still linger. BUT. As a middle aged (yes, white) man, I still (to this day) need to hold my tongue so that I don't "blow my cork"! (or in reality lose my temper...)

And it hurts to admit you're out of control. The indignity you suffered in your own home is totally inappropriate, and was totally wrong. But; your outburst was NOT in your own best interests.

So, in closing, You win a 'anger-management' award. Go make some popcorn and plug in the DVD again...(and a second time until you can watch it without reacting!)

I admit, it took me two viewings to NOT burst into angry comments while watching it...

It's simple. Why are we NOT taxing EVERYONE on their ENTiRE income for FICA/SS taxes.

THAT is the answer to the entire SS and medicare problem.

Let the ones making $400,000 pay the taxes on that income. It will allow those only making $50,000 to not have to shoulder the ENTIRE bill.

IRAN: in Irrevesible Failure: Political Analysis

Iran in Irreversible decline: Politics and the Cinema.

Those Iranian TV executives sure do a great job over in Terhan.
Time Magazine has an article discussing the crowds at a showing of 'The Lord of the Rings' in Tehran.

From an anonymous reporter in Tehran, they report:

(and I note: I am quoting, and have only removed the Farsi (Iranian) translations from the story. I also reformatted it to make it easier for the attention-span deprived (like me!) to better understand.
Almost EVERY WORD is identical to the piece as published by TIME.

In normal times, Iranian television usually treats its viewers to one or two Hollywood or European movie nights a week.

But these are not normal times, so it's been two or three such movies a day.

It's part of the push to keep people at home and off the streets, to keep us busy, to get us out of the regime's hair. The message is "Don't worry, be happy."

So channel two there, is putting on a Lord of the Rings marathon as part of the government's efforts to restore peace.

Lots of people, adults and kids, are watching in the room with me. On the screen, Gandalf the Grey returns to the Fellowship as Gandalf the White. He casts a blinding white light, his face hidden behind a halo.

and ....

Someone blurts out, "Is it the Imam?!" (A reference, to the white-bearded Ayatollah Khomeini, who is respectfully called Imam Khomeini).

But "Imam" is also the title of the "Mahdi", the figure that Muslims believe will come to save (them) at the time of the apocalypse. Isn't that special?

(Interesting Question): I wonder what if the officials who picked this film, may be a subversive soul at the controls at the TV Station.

It is way too easy to find political meaning in this film, to draw comparisons to what is happening in real life.
(Lots of Political) Themes in the movie: Alluding to
* Mir-Hossein Mousavi, the candidate that the President claims to have defeated:
* The unwanted quest and the risking of life in pursuit of an unanticipated destiny.
* Could he be Boromir, the imperfect warrior who is heroic at the end, dying to defend
humanity?
* Didn't Mousavi talk about being ready for martyrdom?

And listen: there is a sly (I think cute!) reference to Ahmadinejad.
Iranian films are dubbed very expertly (into Farsi). So the Farsi word they use for hobbit (and also dwarf) is kootoole, or little person. Kootoole, of course, is the term used in many of the chants out on the street against the diminutive President.

That's as much as we can see of an opposition viewpoint on TV. It has a droning sameness, (or an) official message being "politics is a nasty business, but now it's over."

And so we're glued to the Trilogy. We are riveted. A child in the room loudly predicts that Lord of the Rings will put an end to the nightly shouts, that people will not take to the rooftops and windows because this film will keep them occupied.

Besides, (the child says) there is a worrisome rumor,that the "political police" are marking the doorways of those households that continue to call out "Allah Akbar!" at night, a reverse Passover.

The child continues to say, that the kids on his school buses have been chanting, "Then where is our vote?!, Then where is our vote?!" I ask what the driver is doing while all this goes on and the kid tells me that the driver honks along. Honk honk-honk-honk! "Then where is our vote?!"Honk honk-honk-honk!

And so we see political meaning even in the notice that one part of the trilogy is ending,
asking us to be ready for the next. "This is to be continued."

The phrase has become our hesitant slogan, our words of reassurance.

As does this quote (in Farsi) from the movie:

"I wish the ring had never come to me... I wish that none of this had happened..." "So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us..."

This will be continued. This will be continued. People are not going to let up so easily.

WoW. I have to hand it to this brave Iranian for reporting and helping tell us out here in the rest of the world, that they will NOT stop.

Prediction: Iran Will Fall July 15th: Your Guess?

OK. Today (Wednesday, June 24th, one and a half (almost 2 weeks) after the "so-called" election was held.

Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that the June 12 election of hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad would not be reversed. It was (also) accompanied by a vow that the nation's rulers would never yield to demands from the streets.

So. Since the "Supreme Leader" Ayatollah has stepped out THIS far on the ledge, then I think that it is quite telling to start a ledge pool.

OK, I can live with the following:

Tax health care benefits that are GREATER then the CONGRESSIONAL health
plan. I can live with this. But it is absolutely essential, that this needs to BE INDEXED against inflation from the beginning, to AVOID the example of the alternative minimum tax (AMT), and it's creep.

It is ABSOLUTELY imperative for a NEW public plan be allowed to be developed.

REMEMBER. SINCE 1950, the REPUBLICANS have KILLED Health care SIX TIMES

It's time for ALL THOSE "republicans with a gun" to shoot themselves in the foot, and then go
to the emergency room, and let themselves be made bankrupt because of the costs.

DID YOU KNOW that 78% of ALL bankruptcies in the United States have a root cause from Illnesses, uninsured, and even INSURED consumers.

Here's food for thought.

We absolutely need to use the EXISTING system to phase in this ONE single player
plan.
We can start by contracting with these companies, so they are aware it will be a time-
limited phased in plan.

Perhaps five years for the first part of the plan. That is, Aetna, and Met-Life, etc will ALL
start to enroll uninsured consumers into their large corporate plans. These companies will be told that they need to start to make these plans uniform, and similar.

Employers will get money back for some of the details changed.

WE MUST NOT let the lobbyists and REPUBLICANS torpedo HEALTH CARE again

Meow?-Out*: Cat Parasite affects 1/2 the globe?!!!!

According to ABC/AP, We're(almost) all infected by a huge parasite.

This parasite, Toxoplasma gondii, has been transmitted indirectly from cats to roughly half the people on the planet.

Now comes the strange stuff. I will (as usual for this blog), pretend this is NEWS for the normally impaired.

Toxoplasma is not a new disease. In an article published over 12 years ago, the folks at Michigan State University published an article titled, "Why shouldn't pregnant women clean the cat litter box?" Oh yeah.
It's been proven that you don't have to get rid of your cat(s) if you're pregnant, just be more careful, and perhaps just use rubber gloves, or get the household's MALE to change the litter for you...

So we're not breaking any ground on new dangers. Just on REALLY weird behaviors and outcomes. I repeat the previous block quote. Over 1/2 of the HUMANS on the planet are infected with Toxoplasma (hereafter toxo for short).

Today's discussion. Toxo has been shown to affect human personalities in different ways. Both men and women who are infected are more prone to feeling guilty and insecure. Other researchers have linked the parasite to schizophrenia.

Women who are infected with the parasite tend to be warm, outgoing and attentive to others.
Men tend to be less intelligent and probably a bit boring.

The actual lifecyle of toxo is actually quite interesting.
It can change the personality of a rat so much that the rat surrenders itself to a cat, just as the parasite wanted. (See & Listen here).

The lifecycle in short:

The parasite's eggs are shed in a cat's feces.
A rat comes along, eats the feces, and becomes infected.
The behavior of the rat undergoes a dramatic change, making the rat more adventuresome and more likely to hang out around cats.
The cat eats the rat, and the parasite goes into the cat's stomach, and reproduces.
The parasite then sheds its eggs into the feces, and the cycle of its life is completed.

Note, that the parasite cannot reproduce UNLESS it is in the stomach of a cat!
But...
The question changes slightly...

"We have a parasite in our brain that is trying to get transmitted to a cat," the researcher says. "This changes an individual's personality."

So if enough personalities are changed in a given society, will the culture of that society also be changed?
Another question: if enough of us are infected and undergo personality changes, will that also alter our combined personalities or our culture?

And yet, as a parent (and reader) of a series of young adult (Sci-Fi) books called, The Animorphs, written by K. A. Applegate, All I Can think of is..YEERKS... no, not JEERK, but Yeerk

A Yeerk is a parasite that takes over...another being by {crawling into} the ear canal. It resembles a small, grey-green slug about six inches long. Yeerks in their natural state have decent senses of smell and touch, but they are blind until they enter a host, as they do not have eyes.

EEEEWWWWW... Toxo is almost ??? as intelligent as a yeerk?? ... the yeerks.. are among us??? but they are REALLY controlled by cats???!!!!

Justice Scalia (at a conference hosted by the Institute of American and Talmudic Law), said: "Every single datum about my life is private? That's silly!"

In a speech earlier this year, Scalia said,: "that he was not bothered by the availability of such information. "I don't find that particularly offensive," he said. "I don't find it a secret what I buy, unless it's shameful."

He added there's some information that's private, "but it doesn't include what groceries I buy," according to the AP.

Now, I will paraphrase for the emotionally or ethically impaired. The justice says, that there is no such thing as privacy, as there is no such thing as privacy...

I am in a state of shock at the lack of decorum and finesse shown by our supreme court justice. PERHAPS a move to start IMPEACHMENT charges against him for inappropriate conduct unbecoming a supreme, might be a start.

Joel Reidenberg, (they guy in the inset photo on the left above) a professor at Fordham University law school (in NY) assigned a project to students in his information privacy law course. A group project, that is.

was {ONLY} intended, as an exercise to show students the amount of personal information that can be easily gleaned from the Web.

Now, I will again paraphrase for the emotionally or ethically impaired.

a) The information was NOT made public, and b) this was designed to show HOW much of our information is on the web.

Lets see... Apparently all hell broke loose, when Professor Reidenberg discussed the assignment at an academic conference last week. As to be expected, his comments were (then) posted on a popular legal blog.

And, to further infuriate Justice Scalia (in my humble opinion) Professor Reidenberg said he assigns a similar project each year. As a matter of fact, he said, he used himself as the test subject last year.

Reidenberg said he (only) picked Scalia after the Justice said during a speech earlier this year (which we dissected above) that he (Justice Scalia) did not believe the law should necessarily protect personal, but easily available, information.

So (again) for the emotionally or ethically impaired, I again opine, that:

Hey, call me a stickler, but in my humble opinion it is Professor Reidenberg 100, and Justice Scalia love in this match.

Perhaps Justice Scalia should give his seat on the Supremes to Professor Reidenberg, as the spoils of war. I'd say It's time for Justice Scalia to
a) stop speaking in public
b) Pray that a recall/impeachment drive for his seat does not start up (hint -hint!)
c) pray his time on life and Justice (after all, it was a seminar on TALMUDIC law!) is not used up.

I'm writing this in response to a reader who essentially fed me what I call the republican party line.
That is (and remember this is MY blog, but I welcome fair and appropriate comments)
the person who wrote to me said:

"Barack Obama is going to make this a Socialist Country"

and about 50 other similar epithets.

The background I believe that:
* ~~We're HEADING into a DEPRESSION.~~ We're (now) IN a depression!
* It's going to be as BAD as the last one.
* I call this Depression 2.0
* The current failures only bring us 25% into the problem!!
* According to Robert Reich (former Sec'y of Labor under Clinton): The only number that he EVER saw, defining the
depression was that the unemployment rate hovered around 25%.
* We need a new deal.
* After 58 years of NO Health Care Reform (since 1950!) it will FINALLY be coming soon...
* We've managed to WASTE a FULL generation (from Zero to thirty) with decaying social, educational, and interpersonal skills.
* Our nation is no longer DOING (producing) anything.
SO, from these few premises, I have extrapolated a great deal of items to FIX our society...

But....
We need to make sure that a number of issues are resolved ALL at once.
If we don't do them ALL at once, its like juggling three RUNNING chain saws, but dropping one!

Here's what I came up with:

We need to do the FOLLOWING to FIX our Society:
* Create A Living Wage
* Create a National Single payer Healthcare
* Create a National 3-4 year draft (or alternate service)
* Create a Federally paid Day Care starting at six months
* Implement Tax Reform on the ULTRA Rich
* Lobbying (Political Reform)
* Education
* Infrastructure (road /bridge/Systems repairs)
* Lack of Training/futures
* Truth and Reconcilliation Commission
* A new "Manhattan" project, focusing on Energy INDEPENDENCE

MidEast: Peace in the Holy Land: An Op-Ed

'Peace in the Holy Land'

is the title of Nobel peace prize winner Jimmy Carter, the former President of the United States. Is it realistic? Is it biased? Can it be achieved? President Carter is now on the talk show circuit to try and publicize his book. His last book, "Palestine Peace Not Apartheid" was widely seen by those in and outside of the Jewish community as extremely biased against the Jewish state....

President Carter comes with a history. Yes, he did get Sadat and Begin to a peace treaty. No, the cold peace between Egypt and Israel hasn't been an overwhelming success.

I agree that we need a two state solution to the 'Palestine Problem', but as the last sixty years has proven, there can be no peace, until a piece of land has been given to both parties.

Starting the peace process using the 1967 borders is like balancing your checkbook without your bank statement. You can arrive at a solution, but the problem will not be resolved, because you don't have all the information you need to fix the problem.

I contend that ignoring the politics of the British Mandate period (1917-1948) is just like balancing your checkbook without all the information you need.

British Mandate policy on the territories it administered totally distorted and affected the entire Mideast. After defeating the Ottoman Empire in the 'Great War', Britain was charged with administering all the territories fairly for its people.

In this Britain totally failed. Sir Winston Churchill, in one of his earlier overseas postings made a mistake that stills reverberates to the current day. In a move which today looks strikingly partisan, Sir Winston (in 1924) gave one half of the entire Palestinian territory that Britain was "watching" to a person (in Jerusalem) that was giving him problems.

This land, which would later be called, "Trans-Jordan' has FIFTY percent of the land from the 'Palestinian Mandate', that the League of Nations authorized Britain to administer until new nations could be created there. This country (Trans-Jordan) is also the nation that annexed ALL of the land (25% of the original "mandate") designated to be the Arab Palestinian state by the U.N. resolution in 1948.

It's startling to think that "Sir Winston", so totally messed up the entire Mideast, with a simple proclamation in 1924.

One of the most important things all Jews can do is to: first learn more about this, and second, to demand that the borders of the two state solution be based on the U.N.'s 1948 Resolution. However, the most important step we need to take as Jews, is to demand that all Arab states ratify and accept the U.N. 1948 two state Resolution, and that there are two states there, Israel, and an Arab/Palestinian state.

In the eighty years since the British gave half of the proposed two states of Palestine/Israel away, it has been shown time and time again that the Arab countries (and its people) do NOT respect the right of the Jewish state to exist. It is futile for Jews to support a 1967 border. It is futile for Jews to support a 1956 border, or a 1980 border. The only way that the Jewish land can survive is if ALL of its people understand that the 1948 two state solution does the following:

Establishes Two different states, an Arab/Palestinian state AND a Jewish State (Israel).
Establishes two states with borders that are SUBSTANTIALLY different then the borders after the war.
Establishes that a great deal of the PALESTINIAN state resides in what is now JORDAN.
Forever will put to rest (since the Arab states will need to ratify this before getting their land) any question of a Jewish state existing (or not existing).
Makes the question of Arab treatment of the Palestinian 'refugees' a question of second class treatment.. Why were the residents of the west bank in Refugee camps for twenty years under Arab rule? Where were the Human Rights activists then?

To summarize, I believe that negotiations based on any borders except the 1948 borders will NOT lead to peace, will not lead to a cessation of violence, and are useless. This does not mean I do not want peace. I do. However, if the Arab world really wants Peace, they have to, 'put some blood' in the deal, and also make concessions. Israel has made many many concessions in the past (remember we occupied Sinai not once in 1967, but also in 1956 too, and were forced to give it back under threat by President Eisenhower) , but has not gotten peace for ANY of its concessions. Until the Arab world also has to feel pain, there will never be peace.

This is my answer to George Mitchell, who also failed in 1991 to come to a fair and honorable peace.

Founder of TV network aimed at countering Muslim stereotypes accused of beheading wife in NY

Muzzammil "Mo" Hassan is accused of beheading his wife last week, days after she filed for divorce.

Hassan and his {NOW DECEASED wife} lived in Orchard Park — a well-off Buffalo suburb — and started Bridges TV there in 2004 with the aim of developing understanding between North America and the Middle East and South Asia. The network, available across the U.S. and Canada, was believed to be the first English-language cable station aimed at the rapidly growing Muslim demographic.

Paul Moskal, who worked for the FBI in Buffalo became friendly with the husband, when he was interviewed would on Bridges TV in shows that were intended to improve understanding between Muslim-Americans and law enforcement.
"His personal life kind of betrayed what he tried to portray publicly," Moskal said.

Orchard Park Police Chief Andrew Benz said police had responded to domestic incidents involving the couple, most recently Feb. 6, the day the hysband was served with the divorce papers and an order of protection.
Six days later, Hassan went to a police station and told officers his wife was dead at the TV studio.

"We found her laying in the hallway outside the TV studio, his wife's head was near her body." the Police Chief said.

The New York president of the National Organization for Women (NOW), Marcia Pappas, condemned prosecutors for referring to the death as an apparent case of domestic violence.

"This was, apparently, a terroristic version of 'honor killing,'" a statement from NOW said.

Nadia Shahram, who teaches family law and Islam at the University at Buffalo Law School, explained honor killing as a practice still accepted among fanatical Muslim men who feel betrayed by their wives.

"If a woman breaks the law which the husband or father has placed for the wife or daughter, honor killing has been justified," said Shahram, who was a regular panelist on a law show produced by Bridges TV. "It happens all the time. It's been practiced in countries such as Pakistan and in India."

NO it doesn't happen in the US of A, and NO it isn't appropriate HERE OR THERE...

Nancy Sanders, the TV station's news director for 2 1/2 years, remembers him asking her to move her feet during her job interview so he would not see her legs. She was wearing a skirt and stockings.

Sanders, who left the TV network a year ago, said co-workers traded stories about Hassan's apparent violent streak, including one which had him running his wife's car off the road while the couple's two young children were inside. Aasiya herself never spoke of it, she said. "I just do not feel it was an honor killing," Sanders added. "I think it was domestic abuse that got out of control."

IT's NOT time to sit and ARGUE

We're in a Financial Crisis as bad (I believe) as the "Great Depression" (or as I call it now, the Second Depression)...

We are no longer in:

* An election cycle
* A presidential Election
* A period of ""loyal opposition"*
* A time when we can use the 'same old' arguments for/against 'growth' or big government.

The time to argue is OVER. We as Americans have not lived through the times that were prevalent in the first depression of the 1930's.

We can pray, and be grateful, that the head of the Federal Reserve Bank, Ben Bernanke, received his doctorate in studying the 'first (great) depression'.

If Bernanke had not studied the depression so much we would not be at 7.6 percent unemployment on 2/9/09, but we would already perhaps be at double that rate (15%).

I further my argument that now is not the time to play "partisan politics" (democratic or republican). I think that our new president is doing a spectacular job of attempting to be non-partisan, but am totally mystified at the reaction of the republican so called "loyal opposition" when they either say, "More tax cuts, or worse yet, "No more big spending".

Here's what I call the "real deal". (In my opinion), It's going to get much much worse. The economy will not be improving in the short term, or even within 18 months. It will (again in my opinion) get much, much worse.

* The Stock markets will not improve.
* The banks will need to start lending money to people and businesses, but won't until pushed.
* The jobless rate will continue to grow.
* The homeless rates (and foreclosure rate) will continue to skyrocket.

And my number one take-away from this situation:

It's going to require MASSIVE ** amounts of CA$H to pump into our country for us to get out of this second depression. It isn't pretty, it isn't documented (except if you carefully look into the way FDR got us out of the 'great' depression.)

And (as usual for me) *** I used the first depression, and took notes, and came up with a twelve point plan (that the current president has mostly agreed with) to get our country out of this mess.

Hello, While the world watches the ruins in Gaza , you return to your home which remains standing. However, I am sure that it is clear to you that someone was in your home while you were away. I am that someone. I spent long hours imagining how you would react when you walked into your home.

How you would feel when you understood that IDF soldiers had slept on your mattresses and used your blankets to keep warm. I knew that it would make you angry and sad and that you would feel this violation of the most intimate areas of your life by those defined as your enemies, with stinging humiliation. I am convinced that you hate me with unbridled hatred, and you do not have even the tiniest desire to hear what I have to say. At the same time, it is important for me to say the following in the hope that there is even the minutest chance that you will hear me.

I spent many days in your home. You and your family's presence was felt in every corner. I saw your family portraits on the wall, and I thought of my family. I saw your wife's perfume bottles on the bureau, and I thought of my wife. I saw your children's toys and their English language schoolbooks. I saw your personal computer and how you set up the modem and wireless phone next to the screen, just as I do. I wanted you to know that despite the immense disorder you found in your house that was created during a search for explosives and tunnels (which were indeed found in other homes), we did our best to treat your possessions with respect.

When I moved the computer table, I disconnected the cables and lay them down neatly on the floor, as I would do with my own computer. I even covered the computer from dust with a piece of cloth. I tried to put back the clothes that fell when we moved the closet although not the same as you would have done, but at least in such a way that nothing would get lost. I know that the devastation, the bullet holes in your walls and the destruction of those homes near you place my descriptions in a ridiculous light.

Still, I need you to understand me, us, and hope that you will channel your anger and criticism to the right places. I decided to write you this letter specifically because I stayed in your home. I can surmise that you are intelligent and educated and there are those in your household that are university students. Your children learn English, and you are connected to the Internet. You are not ignorant; you know what is going on around you. Therefore, I am sure you know that Qassam rockets were launched from your neighborhood into Israeli towns and cities.

How could you see these weekly launches and not think that one day we would say "enough"?! Did you ever consider that it is perhaps wrong to launch rockets at innocent civilians trying to lead a normal life, much like you? How long did you think we would sit back without reacting? I can hear you saying "it's not me, it's Hamas". My intuition tells me you are not their most avid supporter. If you look closely at the sad reality in which your people live, and you do not try to deceive yourself or make excuses about "occupation", you must certainly reach the conclusion that the Hamas is your real enemy.

The reality is so simple, even a seven year old can understand: Israel withdrew from the Gaza strip, removing military bases and its citizens from Gush Katif. Nonetheless, we continued to provide you with electricity, water, and goods (and this I know very well as during my reserve duty I guarded the border crossings more than once, and witnessed hundreds of trucks full of goods entering a blockade-free Gaza every day).

Despite all this, for reasons that cannot be understood and with a lack of any rational logic, Hamas launched missiles on Israeli towns. For three years we clenched our teeth and restrained ourselves. In the end, we could not take it anymore and entered the Gaza strip, into your neighborhood, in order to remove those who want to kill us. A reality that is painful but very easy to explain.

As soon as you agree with me that Hamas is your enemy and because of them, your people are miserable, you will also understand that the change must come from within. I am acutely aware of the fact that what I say is easier to write than to do, but I do not see any other way. You, who are connected to the world and concerned about your children's education, must lead, together with your friends, a civil uprising against Hamas.

I swear to you, that if the citizens of Gaza were busy paving roads, building schools, opening factories and cultural institutions instead of dwelling in self pity, arms smuggling and nurturing a hatred to your Israeli neighbors, your homes would not be in ruins right now. If your leaders were not corrupt and motivated by hatred, your home would not have been harmed. If someone would have stood up and shouted that there is no point in launching missiles on innocent civilians, I would not have to stand in your kitchen as a soldier.

You don't have money, you tell me? You have more than you can imagine.

Even before Hamas took control of Gaza , during the time of Yasser Arafat, millions if not billions of dollars donated by the world community to the Palestinians was used for purchasing arms or taken directly to your leaders bank accounts. Gulf States , the emirates - your brothers, your flesh and blood, are some of the richest nations in the world. If there was even a small feeling of solidarity between Arab nations, if these nations had but the smallest interest in reconstructing the Palestinian people * your situation would be very different. You must be familiar with Singapore . The land mass there is not much larger than the Gaza strip and it is considered to be the second most populated country in the world. Yet, Singapore is a successful, prospering, and well managed country. Why not the same for you?

My friend, I would like to call you by name, but I will not do so publicly. I want you to know that I am 100% at peace with what my country did, what my army did, and what I did. However, I feel your pain. I am sorry for the destruction you are finding in your neighborhood at this moment. On a personal level, I did what I could to minimize the damage to your home as much as possible.

In my opinion, we have a lot more in common than you might imagine. I am a civilian, not a soldier, and in my private life I have nothing to do with the military. However, I have an obligation to leave my home, put on a uniform, and protect my family every time we are attacked.

I have no desire to be in your home wearing a uniform again and I would be more than happy to sit with you as a guest on your beautiful balcony, drinking sweet tea seasoned with the sage growing in your garden. The only person who could make that dream a reality is you.

Take responsibility for yourself, your family, your people, and start to take control of your destiny. How? I do not know. Maybe there is something to be learned from the Jewish people who rose up from the most destructive human tragedy of the 20th century, and instead of sinking into self-pity, built a flourishing and prospering country.

It is possible, and it is in your hands. I am ready to be there to provide a shoulder of support and help to you.

But only you can move the wheels of history."

It's time to grant him a conditional pardon
COMMUTE his sentence until time served.

The school, located next to a Gaza zoo, was entirely surrounded by a fuse connecting to the explosives. Inside the abandoned classrooms, IDF troops found a number of weapons.

TECH: firefox 3.05. Speedup with WINXP or (even *NIX)

OK. After having to google WHY my firefox was a terrible speed turtle, I found several answers:

Remember. The last SUPPORT date for Firefox 2.0.18 (last version) is YESTERDAY, so upgrade now...

ALL summarized HERE: (original source also cited.)

1a) ADVANCED users only!: disable your Phishing protection (it currently goes to Google for EVERY single website to check, and then writes in a local file in your profile!)

in FireFox select Tools/Options/Security: top third says
UNCHECK these two boxes:
Tell me if the site I'm visiting is a suspected attack site
Tell me if the site I'm visiting is a suspected forgery.

Next : Click OK, then Close Firefox.
If you're running Linux or Unix, just remove the file listed in 1d)

Now: open a command window:
1b) Start/Run/cmd
1c) at the black dos window type "cd \" (dont type quotes)
1d) dir " urlclassifier3.sqlite" /s
1e) when found, remove that file! (easier to do it using the 'my computer', then in dos window.
1f) close the command window.

Circuit City just announced they were closing (20% ??) of their stores by 12/31/07

so Why are they opening a new store in New Jersey (on route 22, in Bound Brook)?

I just don't get it. Just take the loss on the lease, don't hire anyone, and turn place back to the landlord...

Depression and NPR: not the mental kind

hMM. A few months ago I mentioned I was starting to log news articles about the great depression, and that the incidents of citations was rising very much.

Well today, NPR had an interesting story, talking about Franklin Delano Roosevelt, on the campaign trail offering voters solutions to the Great Depression.

Very interesting, and VERY Pertinent to what I keep saying... (We're ALREADY in a F#&#king Depression people!)
and that FDR didn't exactly keep HIS campaign promise to CUT taxes and GOVERNMENT either

Today's McCain vs. Yesterday's

Hey All. I actually like John McCain. Or the John McCain that he USED to be

before he:
* Changed his policy on Immigration
* Changed his policy on no negative campaigning
* Changed his policy on NOT making the BUSH tax cut permanent.
* Changed his morals to win the republican nomination.
* Gave up his moral standing (by nominating an empty Dress and Bra for Vice President)

The man he WAS stood for a lot. The man pretending to be John McCain on the campaign trail
is but a shell of the MAN that he was.

*WHY did McCain Fire his advisers, and hire all the republican advisors that do NEGATIVE campaigns? WHAT happened to his ethics?
*Why did McCain decide NOT to nominate a qualified candidate, and make this a NON-partisan race for the white house (by nominating Joe Lieberman for VP?)

I really don't understand how someone can look at the moral gaffes that McCain has made in this campaign, and still say he will be better then Obama.

In my mind, the only two arguments that come up, are from former Hillary supporters who say

He isn't tested. He isn't experienced enough.
or from someone
who just can't openly admit that they are still bigoted, and can't vote for a black for president.

Obama:Black majority? or Jesse Jackson?

Give me a break.

I (as a white american) think the question of Obama immediately changing our country to
favor blacks, is really quite chilling.

I've spent almost 45 years trying to live down my parent and grandparents views of black relations. (The yiddish word schvatze [prounounced sch-vaart-che], literally meaning 'black')
was not really used as a nice word in their generation.

It's taken almost 40-50 years for this to go away. I'm grateful it has.
A black president? My first question is NOT , as they may have said, "A schvatze?", but instead "is he qualified?"

I'm really happy it's come this far.

Now. Is John McCain Qualified?

John McCain on economics: "I know nothing about economics"
Barak Obama on economics: Here are some ideas to get us OUT of this economics mess.

John McCain on government regulation: CUT, CUT, remove all regulations. (typical republican!)
Barak Obama? : Regulate, regulate, regulate.

Which do YOU think is more important???

oh, and don't forget: John McCain's economic advisor is Former Senator Phil Gramm, the SAME guy who singlehandedly INSERTED a last minute (11:59PM) paragraph DEREGULATING ENRON (and the entire financial marketplace) literally 10 minutes before he retired from the senate, and told NO-BODY he did this!!!!

It's been documented, and PROVEN this is the cause of this fall's financial crisis, since these financial instruments were UNREGULATED by this provision, and caused the problem.

I say Wall Street's greed was caused by UNDER-regulation.

Election'08: It's my party, I'll blog if I want to..

You'd (cry/blog) too, if it happened to you...

And since it's my blog; I am going to be posting daily until after the Election.

Some real interesting feelings:

1) I am not an Obama '"Stepford Wife". I am supporting him with GREAT misgivings.
He is NOT perfect. He IS too 'poised', he is NOT 'heavy with experience', like McCain.

Some positives:

Obama IS qualified to be president on day one (and on day Two, unlike Sarah Palin).
Obama IS (just like Pepsi was), the hope of a NEW Generation.
Obama IS more qualified then John McCain to lead us in this period of UNKNOWN financial UNCERTAINTY. (Remember John McCain Admitted to knowing NOTHING about economics!)
Obama has PLANS for saving our society (sound familiar?-see other blog)
Unlike John McCain, he will actually TAX people with incomes OVER $250,000 per year. Note To (readers)... Do you actually MAKE $250,000 per year? I can only dream of that...PS: MY Proposal says start at 1million, not a quarter of a million!!!, and imposes a MINIMUM Millionaire tax of no less then one percent of GROSS income!

I am very fearful. I see a huge 'alleged' support of Obama. But I fear that if Obama does not win, the 'race' card will have been played by the white majority.

This having been said, I am very very fearful of our country being divided, this time worse then in the stolen Y2K election, where the Supreme Court (forced) the election of the republicans.
(in the survey of votes the next year, it was proven that the democrats would have won!)

I am stating now, that I will be out in force protesting, if more dicey election tactics are revealed this year. Especially since in 2000, and 2004, Republican 'tactics' to split/divert the vote were shown to have occurred.

My worse fear is that this issue will become violent, and will create a new 'UN-CIVIL war'.

It is quite possible, if one thinks about it, that if tactics leading to the rejection of valid voting takes place, it will absolutely lead to a war.

Will prisoners be taken??

Will we be forced to declare sides?

Will we ever have peace after this??

These are all valid thoughts.

And.

I hope that you are thinking, of voting for John McCain, these issues will
help to dissuade you from going out to vote.

If you were a Hilary supporter, I bet you think he is a "wishy-washy" and not a competent leader. If you really want to vote AGAINST Obama, just stay HOME. That's the safest way
to do this in my opinion

BUT NOBODY is asking them the KEY critical QUESTION:

What about ALL the TRILLIONS of dollars in CONSUMER debt that was made into

and sold ALL over the world JUST like the Subprime Mortgages?

Hey. This week's "This American Life", covers the financial crisis.

38 minutes into the show, they discuss the lack of regulation, and how it seems
that it never was done.

The CULPRIT is FORMER senator Phil Gramm. Now a financial industry consultant.

He slipped a paragraph into an appropriations bill which TOTALLY deregulated
all credit markets, and SPECIFICALLY FORBID EVERY state from regulating them too!

He now works for the financial industry.
minute 41 of the program discusses regulating the Credit Default Swap market.

This was UNDONE in 1998, congress was asked to regulate this market, but Senator Gramm slipped this provision into a bill IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT!!!
in the year 2000.

NOTE the SAME Phil Gramm that USED to be an presidential advisor to JOHN MCCain
before he said, "there's no financial crisis, and we're a nation of Whiners."

Minute 52: the Stock injection Plan:

Instead of this PAULSON plan, the fed would just buy shares in the banks...

The STOCK INJECTION plan was INCLUDED in the House and SENATE bill..

(halujah...) THIS is an OPTION...

the stock injection plan would essentially buy shares in a bank, and be able to do with the company just what they did with AIG.

OK we all know there's NO government in Somalia.
And that pirates (real ones) have taken over a Ukrainian ship AP/via ABC

Pirates seized the Ukrainian-operated ship Faina off the coast of Somalia on Thursday as it headed to Kenya carrying 33 Russian-built T-72 tanks and a substantial amount of ammunition and spare parts. The ordnance was ordered by the Kenyan government.

The Pirates say they want $20Million to release the ship and cargo.

I say... Why negotiate with pirates OR terrorists?

Blast the ship into the ocean. say 10 bunker-buster bombs might be a good start.
And make sure that the warships start to SHOOT any survivors that swim off it, or even go onto lifeboats.

LEAVE NO heart beating on the ship..or surrounding waters.

Congress today rebuffed White House pleas to quickly pass its $700 billion Wall Street bailout package without any changes...
and instead drafted bills that would require an oversight board ...and...and... assurances that no taxpayers' money would be used to finance golden parachutes for executives whose companies were at the heart of the economic crisis.
... and ...The Senate proposal went even further than the House bill by including a measure that would give judges the power to rewrite mortgages that were in danger of default to lower monthly payments and avoid foreclosure.
Congress balked at giving Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson a blank check to buy up a mountain of virtually worthless mortgages that posed the biggest threat to the banking industry since the Great Depression. Paulson insisted Sunday that it was only "a matter of days" before credit dried up completely and he argued against any changes to his proposal, including protection for homeowners or a cap on executive compensation.
President Bush added his voice to the urgency of the legislation today and urged Congress to quickly pass the measure and to drop its plans for amendments, saying their demands would "undermine the effectiveness of the plan."
"Indeed, the whole world is watching to see if we can act quickly to shore up our markets," Bush said.
Deputy White House spokesman Tony Fratto later urged Congress to not insist on a cap for executive compensation.

Sarah Palin (has again), shifted her tactics for the second time in three weeks on the "Troopergate" investigation, this time calling to end the very investigation that she herself called for and the one the McCain campaign had said was the only proper venue for a probe.

The Alaskan Attorney General, who initially launched an internal probe into Palin, before the legislature began theirs, is now asking the legislators to withdraw their subpoenas of Palin aides and Palin's husband.

Despite her earlier vows of full cooperation with the (leglislature's) probe, she declared it unlawful. The legislature lacked the authority to investigate the matter, she said. Instead, it should be handled by the state personnel board, Palin asserted -- a panel which is under her authority.

In a 20/20 interview, Palin told ABC's Charles Gibson she dismissed Monegan for poor job performance and that neither she nor her husband pressured Monegan to fire State Trooper Wooten.

"We never did. I never pressured him to hire or fire anybody," Palin CLAIMS.
But Monegan told ABC News.com he was summoned to a meeting with Todd Palin in December 2006, shortly after Sarah Palin became governor.

"I was called to her Anchorage formal Governor's office to talk with Todd Palin about an issue that was a private family matter," recounted Monegan. Todd became "upset," Monegan recalled, when told the allegations had already been investigated and the case would not be re-opened.

But the OIL Lobby lost their NO-BID one year contracts given by the IRAQI oil minister.
The NYTimes reported

that Iraq's Oil Minister, told reporters at the OPEC meeting this past Tuesday, that talks with the six companies (Exxon Mobil, Chevron, Shell, Total, BP), announced in June and then delayed,...
...had dragged on for so long that the companies could not now fulfill the work within that time frame. The companies confirmed on Wednesday that the deals had been canceled.

Geez Louise. Perhaps the Oil Minister actually follows US politics?

(Earlier this summer), a group of Democratic senators led by Charles E. Schumer of New York had appealed to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to block the deals, contending that they could undermine the efforts of Kurds, Sunnis and Shiites to reach agreement on a hydrocarbon law and a revenue-sharing agreement.

This criticism was conveyed to the Iraqi Oil Minister by the American Embassy in Baghdad in late June, and after that the deals were delayed.
“I’m glad the Iraqis heard our plea that to do this now would be bad for Iraq and bad for Iraqi-American relations,” Senator Schumer said in a telephone interview on Wednesday. “It’s a good first step. Now let’s make progress on the long-term” goal of passing a hydrocarbon law, he said.

Community Organizing: Mandatory Draft

We are headed into a period of time when we will have VERY VERY high unemployment,
and especially with the "traditionally under-employed" population segments (hispanic/black teenagers...)

I think that one of the best things we can do as a society is to create a NATIONAL time of SERVICE, after High School (mandatory).

This service can be of two types (and will serve two different purposes), and would be up to the individual teen-ager and family.

Type One: National (US only) Service (and training)
Type Two: Traditional Military Service (and training)

Type two (military service) would ALSO go towards removing the volunteer (and CONTRACTOR) army.

Type One service would work to rebuild the country, as well as teaching valid skills to many different worker classes.

TecH: Kill Bill's(browser) Chrome (vs. Firefox)

Chrome. Very Simple. I put it up, it didn't start my manual start required
Windows Installer.

It finally installed, came up, and I was terribly disapointed when I discovered that
CHROME doesnt have any way to block ads.

Oh well. Uninstalled CHROME, and while I was at it, UNINSTALLED FIREFOX 3.0
and rebooted, and then re-installed firefox 2.0.16.

Firefox 3.0 has TERRIBLE speed issues. It also was NOT compatible with version 2.16s live bookmarks (my ABC bookmarks) is a way I surf the news fast!!!

Anyway TECH TIP: Don't upgrade to Firefox 3.0.1. version 2.16 will have updates and support until the end of December at LEAST!

I thought now that Alberto Gonzales has been gone from our lives for almost a year and a half I'd have nothing else to say about that lackluster, legal lackey.

Yeah, it looks like the ALBERTO man has no ethics, and no B R A I N S either.

Maybe he just forgot that he was the TOP lawman in the country --- Higher then even J. Edgar Hoover was in his cross-dressing life.

Yeah. That's the ticket. He just plain FORGOT he was in charge.

Just like he FORGOT the combination to his SAFE as the Attorney-General of the UNITED STATES.

Now remember I've worked in Computer Security for almost 20 years, and am a VERY big supporter of Individual passwords...

That means if you have two email accounts (say gmail and yahoo),
you would NEVER ever EVER use the SAME password for both, in case ONE of them got compromised!

In my professional life, I never gave the password out to different systems. However, in case I was hit by a truck, the manager was given a double sealed Envelope.
Inside the First envelope was a envelope saying. Master Password list for XYZ system
do not open unless an emergency.
The outside envelope was simply a handwritten message, saying "From Mark"
(and ideally, that envelope would go in Manager's Safe (or in this case Manager's Secretary's Safe!)

Senator John McCain decided to nominate Governor Palin.

Apparently (according to ABC Newss' The Notes )
reports that:

The "advance team" only got to Alaska last Thursday, one day before the announcement.
She is against 'earmarks'. The Note reports that...

Palin, who decried the practice of budgetary 'earmarks' sought, as the state's chief executive and as mayor of Wasilla, hundreds of millions of dollars in such federal funding for local projects."

AND... She also employed a lobbying firm to secure almost $27 million in federal earmarks for a town of 6,700 residents while she was its mayor," The Washington Post's Paul Kane reports. The items she got while mayor included:
$500,000 for a youth shelter
$1.9 million for a transportation hub
$900,000 for sewer repairs
$15 million for a rail project
"In fiscal year 2002, Wasilla took in $6.1 million in earmarks -- about $1,000 in federal money for every resident.
By contrast, Boise, Idaho -- which has more than 190,000 residents -- received $6.9 million in earmarks in fiscal 2008,"
Kane adds. "

Is it private (a family matter?) or a matter for the public:

Governor Palin is a public figure, and has been in the public spotlight (as mayor/commissioner/governor) for At LEAST 14 of the 17 years in Her daughter's life.

I will propose that FAMILY VALUES i.e., the discussion that PARENTs and CHILDREN should have about the facts of life (AKA the birds and the bees) talk with their children.

TO ME (at least), it is apparent that her daughter MISSED that talk, and I am wondering if she ever got one in the BUSY, rushed life that Governor Palin must lead with five children.

The dear Old NYTimes reports:

That people are upset because of a new application you can download onto your IPhone that is called "I Am Rich". That is the name of a program you can download from ITunes that does NOTHING except signal to the world that its buyer was wealthy enough to have spent $1,000 to download an image of a multifaceted ruby.

Created by a German software developer, Armin Heinrich, it was written pretty much as a joke. “I found that some users complain about prices for iPhone applications above 99 cents,” Mr. Heinrich said. “I regard it as art. I did not expect many people to buy it and did not expect all the fuss about it.”

But buy it (at least) 8 people did, reported The Los Angeles Times, earning its developer $5,600, his 70 percent share of the purchase price.

Since then, Apple has notified Mr. Heinrich that two of the sales were reversed. Some people apparently bought it by mistake, with at least one saying he hit the “one click” button, not expecting the sale to go through.

A Night (or day) at the power tool drag races. The premise is simple: Take a hand-held power tool. Rebuild it into a racing machine.

Will it run? Maybe. Will it crash? Could be. Will it entertain? Most definitely.

Since a pair of San Francisco Bay area artists held the first power tool drag races six years ago, technophiles have exported the tradition to three continents, holding similar competitions in Sacramento, Seattle, Canada, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Israel.
They’ve raced everything from power drills and grinders to upright vacuum cleaners, leaf blowers, chain saws and even the occasional fire extinguisher.

“It’s a lot of zip ties, bailing wire, and clamps. It’s pretty lo-fi,” a racer said after a race in May at the Maker Faire, an annual summit of tinkerers and their inventions. But that’s what he likes about these races: “The ingenuity of it all, it’s kind of a MacGyver sort of thing, a lot of bubble gum and duct tape.”

Take the simplest racing tool of all: the humble belt sander. Out of the box, it’s a ready-made racer. Put it on a flat surface with the belt facing down, lock the trigger into the on position, and your tool will automatically propel itself forward like a tiny tank. (For belt sanders that don’t have trigger locks, you could make MacGyver proud by cinching down the trigger with a zip tie.)

Another gentleman raced a can opener, which set the record for slowness. In five minutes, it crawled about a foot and a half, delighting the audience.

When the power tool drag races ran at Kinnernet, a creative technology gathering in Israel, one of the most unusual entries wasn’t a speedster. Yedidia Vardi, a tinkerer, and Michal Levy, a musician, combined a cordless drill, roller skates, and a couple of mallets. They lined the racetrack with about 100 wine bottles filled with different levels of water. As their racer paraded down the line, it struck each bottle in turn, pinging out the tune of “Oh! Susanna.”

SO, from these few premises, I have extrapolated a great deal of items to FIX our society...

But....
We need to make sure that a number of issues are resolved ALL at once.
If we don't do them ALL at once, its like juggling three RUNNING chain saws, but dropping one!

Here's what I came up with:

We need to do the FOLLOWING to FIX our Society:
* Create A Living Wage
* Create a National Single payer Healthcare
* Create a National 3-4 year draft (or alternate service)
* Create a Federally paid Day Care starting at six months
* Implement Tax Reform on the ULTRA Rich
* Lobbying (Political Reform)
* Education
* Infrastructure (road /bridge/Systems repairs)
* Lack of Training/futures
* Truth and Reconcilliation Commission
* A new "Manhattan" project, focusing on Energy INDEPENDENCE

Hacking the Wiley Hacker (2) DefCon Presentation suppressed

Oh I love the EFF
Even if they support folks who belive that information needs to be FREE!

The REAL Hacker Convention (DEFCON)** had a presentation suppressed today by a Boston Federal Judge, who blocked three MIT students from showing how to hack the Boston "T".

The judge ordered the three MIT students to cancel the presentation at a defcon (in LAS VEGAS) where they planned to show security flaws in the automated fare system used by Boston's subway.

BIG F#$%^ing Deal. Let me hazard a few guesses. (This is NOT the first time this topic came up in the past few years:)

I'm too lazy to google the results, (AND heaven forbid that this judge in Boston actually knew how to read this blog post, and arrested me for contempt of court!) but I can tell you that:
(I learned this from a few papers that WERE published a few years ago about fare card in general, and I think, NYC's in particular!)

* The Mag stripe on most current cards is NOT encrypted.
* The Mag Stripe encryption used, can be read using a tape cassette head
* The amount encoded in the card is a read/write field (of sorts).
* Oh Yeah, the readers and systems use Micro$oft WINDOW$. IS that bad enough?

and my general opinion of the outcome:

* It is essentially such a trivial task that if counterfeiters were interested in doing it, it would be a no-brainer to bankrupt the transit system, BUT on a nickel-dime transaction (your weekly fare-card), likelihood of getting caught is not worth the ticket/time in jail...

but tell the stupid jack-A$$ judge that. the jerk likely is a hunt and peck typist, and graduated law school before PC's were commonplace. At least in another 20 year all the luddite judges and legislators will have died or retired, and we can start having reasonable discussions about privacy, open access to networks, and WHY it is Better to have this INFORMATION in the PUBLIC, so that CHANGES are made, rather then hiding these design flaws away again!

depression was that the unemployment rate hovered around 25%.

The Hacker's conference (BlackHat2008) in Las Vegas tells people:
That their 'show' network is NOT secure, and they should be prepared to be 'outed' if they don't PRACTICE SAFE COMPUTING...since the

public Wi-Fi network, always has widespread snooping on ANY traffic passing over it...

Three (french) journalists captured what they claimed were usernames and passwords of reporters from at least two different media outlets — eWeek and CNET News.

The eWeek reporter told organizers his login credentials looked like they were legitimate, while the CNET information appeared to be bogus.

Does it matter if they were legitimate or not?

Everyone attending the Black Hat convention is warned that the conference's public wireless network is being monitored by hackers.

People who send sensitive personal data over it are cautioned they might have that information posted on the Wall of Sheep, a forum to embarrass security professionals who don't follow proper security procedures themselves.

I like that. The Wall of Sheep. Can we have a local one too???

Black Hat organizers said the reporters were ONLY caught when they took their ~~purloined~~ S*T*O*L*E*N prized passwords to the Wall of Sheep workers and asked them to post the information.

The workers refused. When questioned, one of the French journalists said he was trying to "educate the press" about the importance of sending data securely, organizers said.

A staff attorney for the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), said his organization is investigating whether Black Hat organizers can take legal action against the French journalists. He said the breach may have even broken criminal laws.

The EFF is a civil liberties group focused on free speech and privacy on the Internet and often takes up journalists' legal cases.
